What is Mosquitoes?

Mosquitoes can infect you with diseases if you are bitten while travelling.
Diseases you can get from mosquitoes include yellow fever, malaria, dengue, Japanese encephalitis, West Nile virus, chikungunya, Eastern equine encephalitis, Barmah Forest virus, Murray Valley encephalitis, Ross River virus, Saint Louis encephalitis, Zika and Oropouche virus.
Which mosquito-borne diseases matter for your trip is in the LCR advice per country. Keep mosquitoes away with repellent, covering clothing and a mosquito net where needed.
According to WHO
- Vector-borne diseases, including those spread by mosquitoes, cause more than 700,000 deaths a year.
- Aedes mosquitoes can transmit chikungunya, dengue, yellow fever and Zika; Culex mosquitoes can transmit Japanese encephalitis, among others.
- WHO describes dengue as the most prevalent viral infection transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes.
