What is Fièvre jaune?
According to LCR (Dutch travel advice)
Yellow fever is an infectious disease caused by a virus.
You can get yellow fever in certain parts of Africa and South America.
Humans and monkeys can carry the virus. You get it if you are bitten by a mosquito. You cannot infect other people.
You may feel flu-like with fever, and sometimes jaundice, when your skin and the whites of your eyes turn yellow. You can also become seriously ill and die. Between 3 and 20 percent of people who get yellow fever die from the disease.
You can be vaccinated against yellow fever. For some countries the vaccination is required. If it is required, you must have received it at least ten days before arrival. Even when it is not required, LCR advises vaccination if you travel to an area where yellow fever occurs.
Not every travel clinic is allowed to give yellow fever vaccine: only clinics that meet legal requirements. Always ask a travel clinic for advice.
According to WHO
- Yellow fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease, mainly spread by day-biting mosquitoes. 27 African and 13 Latin American countries are classed as high-risk.
- About 15% of those infected develop severe disease (jaundice, bleeding, organ failure). About half of patients in that phase die within 7–10 days.
- A single vaccine dose provides lifelong protection. Under the International Health Regulations, countries may require proof of vaccination from travellers.
