What is Chikungunya?
According to LCR (Dutch travel advice)
Chikungunya is a viral infectious disease. It is very similar to dengue (breakbone fever).
You can get chikungunya in urban areas in many countries with a warm or (sub)tropical climate.
You get the disease if you are bitten by a mosquito carrying chikungunya. That happens mainly during the day, between sunrise and sunset. You cannot infect other people.
If you are pregnant you can pass the virus to your baby, especially just before or during birth. The baby can then become seriously ill. Travel in the last trimester to a country with a large chikungunya outbreak is advised against.
Chikungunya resembles flu, with fever, headache, muscle and back pain, nausea and vomiting. You can also get a rash and joint pain. Symptoms usually last one to three weeks. Joint pain can sometimes last months to years. Death is rare. After recovery you cannot get chikungunya from the same virus again.
Keep mosquitoes away during the day. In the Netherlands, vaccination against chikungunya has been possible since April 2025. For some travellers it can be useful. Ask a travel clinic what is possible for you.
According to WHO
- Chikungunya is transmitted by infected mosquitoes, with large outbreaks mainly in the Americas, Asia and Africa.
- It causes fever and often severe, sometimes prolonged joint pain. Death is rare.
- There is no specific antiviral. Vaccines have been approved in some countries but are not yet widely available.
